Installing Recordist on Linux
Version 0.3.12 is the first Linux beta, for x86_64. It comes as an AppImage (Recordist_<version>_amd64.AppImage) and as a .deb (Recordist_<version>_amd64.deb); the download page shows the current version. Both are free on the download page, with no account and no email, and are labelled a preview. Read Windows and Linux status for what has and has not been tested.
What you need
- x86_64, with glibc 2.35 or newer. That means Ubuntu 22.04 or Debian 12 and later. Ubuntu 20.04, Debian 11 and RHEL 9 are too old.
- PipeWire or PulseAudio, to capture sound.
- FUSE 2, for the AppImage only.
Check the file
The download page shows the SHA-256 of each file next to its button, and so does the email if you asked for the link. In a terminal, in the folder you downloaded to:
sha256sum Recordist_*_amd64.AppImage
Compare the result with the one on the download page.
The AppImage
-
Check the file as above.
-
Make it runnable, then start it:
chmod +x Recordist_*_amd64.AppImage ./Recordist_*_amd64.AppImage -
If it does not start, FUSE 2 is probably missing. On Ubuntu 22.04 run
sudo apt install libfuse2. On Ubuntu 24.04 the package islibfuse2t64. Or skip FUSE and run./Recordist_*_amd64.AppImage --appimage-extract-and-run. -
Keep the file in one place. If you move it, start at login stops working. Updates replace the file where it is.
The .deb
Install it with apt, which also fetches what it needs:
sudo apt install ./Recordist_*_amd64.deb
That brings libayatana-appindicator3-1, libpulse0 and pulseaudio-utils. Updates to a .deb install ask for your password, because they change files owned by root. To remove Recordist:
sudo apt remove recordist
Limits on Linux
- Wayland. The record card cannot stay on top of other windows, global shortcuts do not work, and window titles are not read, so a call in a browser stays “Browser” unless the Chrome extension is paired. On an X11 session the shortcut works as on Windows.
- GNOME. Without the AppIndicator extension, GNOME shows no tray icon. Recordist still runs; open it from the applications menu.
- Browser calls. Pair the Chrome extension to get the meeting’s name and a precise start and end.
- Notes engine. The first time you make notes, the app downloads the notes engine, about 1.4 GB, from GitHub.
Updates
The app checks for updates and installs them itself, signed with Recordist’s own updater key. See How updates work.
