A note from the people who make it
Why Recordist exists
There are many meeting tools, and a lot of them are good. We didn't build Recordist because the others don't work. We built it because of three things we kept running into. Here they are as a short picture first, then in plain words.
Recordist presents
a short picture in seven scenes · no sound required
Imagine.
The call that matters. You, three people, and a decision to make.
And then…
A guest nobody invited.
Oh no.
Your words, on a boat to a server you will never see.
And the bill.
Priced for a team of fifty. You are a team of one.
Oh.
There is another way.
Recordist.
It asks first, it stays on your computer, and the ledger reads zero.
Awesome.
The follow-up is drafted before the lid is closed. Nobody saw a robot.

The guest in the room
Most notetakers join the call as a participant. Everyone can see it, some people stop talking freely, and in some companies it isn't allowed in at all. We wanted the notes without the guest. Recordist records from your own computer, so there's nothing in the roster, and it asks you before every recording.
Where the audio goes
Nearly all of them send the recording to a server to be transcribed and summarised. That's a reasonable way to build software, and it comes with a privacy policy you have to trust. We wanted a version where there's nothing to trust, because nothing leaves your computer. So Recordist keeps a ledger of every byte it ever sends, and you can read it any time.
The price of a seat
Meeting tools are mostly priced for teams: per seat, per month, with the useful parts on the higher tier. That's fine for a company buying for fifty people. It's a lot for one person who wants their own calls handled. In Recordist, recording, transcription and search are on the Free plan, which has no time limit, and Pro is $6 a month.
What we believe
- Your meetings are yours. They live on your computer, and the software works for you, not for a data business.
- Software should ask before it records, every time.
- Nobody should get marketing email from us. The only email we send is one you asked for.
- A price should be easy to explain in one sentence.
- A company that never holds your data can't lose it, sell it, or be asked to hand it over.
What this isn't
Recordist won't be the right choice for everyone. If your team needs a shared cloud library, names for each person on the other side of the call, or a Windows or Linux build that has already been proven on real hardware, other tools do that better right now, and we say so plainly. We'd rather you pick the right tool than pick us.
Who we are
A small independent studio in Ontario, Canada, with no investors and no data business. The only way we grow is by being worth recommending. If Recordist helps, tell one person who would be helped too. If it doesn't, tell us.
