Recordist vs Granola
Granola: Bot-free notepad that transcribes your meetings in the cloud.
Granola is the product people most often mention in the same breath as Recordist, because it also refuses to put a bot in your call. It is a beautifully made notepad: you type rough notes during the meeting, Granola listens through your computer's audio, and afterwards it turns your notes plus the transcript into a polished document. It started on Mac and has since added Windows and iOS.
The similarity ends at the audio. Granola streams your meeting audio to cloud transcription services and runs its AI in the cloud; Recordist transcribes and summarises on the machine. Both are honest about this in their documentation, and it is the main thing to weigh.

The bot
Neither product joins the call. Granola captures system audio and your microphone on the device, exactly as Recordist does, so nobody sees a participant and the meeting platform is not involved. Both leave consent to you. Granola's help centre says so plainly, and so does ours.
The difference in the moment of recording is the prompt. Granola is built around a note you open for the meeting; Recordist is built around a confirm card that appears when a meeting is detected and does nothing until you click Record. If you forget to open Granola, you have no transcript; if you ignore Recordist's card, it goes away on its own.
Where the audio goes
Granola's documentation says audio is sent to third-party transcription providers and is not stored after the transcript is produced; the transcript and the notes are stored in Granola's cloud so they sync across your devices and can be shared. Its AI summarisation runs in the cloud as well. Granola is therefore a processor of your meeting audio, briefly, and of your transcripts, durably.
Recordist transcribes with Whisper on your machine and writes the result to a local SQLite database. Notes come from the built-in engine on your machine by default. Nothing syncs anywhere unless you set up an export folder yourself. The Privacy Ledger lists every outbound byte so you can check.
Price and limits
Granola offers a free trial of 25 meetings, after which an individual plan is about $18 a month and business seats are around $14 per user per month billed annually. There is no free plan.
Recordist is free, with no time limit, for unlimited recording, transcription, search and Prep Briefs, with 14 days of Pro, then 3 AI notes a month. Pro is $6 a month or $48 a year; Team is $9 per user per month. The gap is large because the expensive part, transcription, runs on hardware you already own.
Agent access and offline use
Granola launched a hosted MCP server in 2025 for paid plans, which is a genuine strength: Claude or Cursor can read your Granola notes through Granola's cloud with your account. It is hosted, so it reads the cloud copy and needs a connection.
Recordist's MCP server and A2A agent card run on your own computer against your local database, on the Free plan for reading. Recording, transcription, search and local notes work with the Wi-Fi off; Granola needs a connection to transcribe at all.
When Granola is the better choice
If you like writing notes during the meeting and want them enhanced rather than generated from scratch, Granola's editor is the best in the category and Recordist does not try to compete with it. If you want your notes to sync between a Mac, a Windows machine and an iPhone, Granola's cloud is the point. And if you are comfortable with cloud transcription, Granola's accuracy and polish are excellent.
When Recordist is the better choice
If the transcript itself must never leave your machine, if you want a free tier that is actually free, or if you want your agents reading local data rather than a cloud copy, Recordist is the bot-free choice built for that.
