Recordist and Tactiq
Tactiq: Browser extension that turns a meeting's captions into a live transcript and AI notes in your Tactiq account.
What we admire. Tactiq put a live transcript one click away in the browser, and more than a million people use it.
With Recordist, your call is transcribed from its own sound on your laptop: no account, no bot and no captions to turn on, whether you join in a browser or in the Zoom or Teams app. Recording, transcription and search are free with no limit, the notes are written on your laptop too, and the audio stays with you, so a line can be checked against the voice that said it, while the audio is kept. The Recordist extension also gives you a live transcript in the browser, from the meeting's captions, kept on your laptop with no account.
Tactiq is a widely used Chrome extension: its store page lists 1,000,000 users. You add it to your browser, sign in, and a live transcript appears beside your Google Meet, Zoom or Microsoft Teams call, with no bot joining. After the call it writes a summary and action items, and it connects to tools such as Google Docs, Notion, Slack and HubSpot. Getting started takes one call and no download, and that is a real strength.

The bot
Neither joins the call. Tactiq works inside your browser tab. On its Free plan, a message in the meeting chat tells everyone Tactiq is transcribing; its plans page lists turning that notice off as a Pro feature. A notice is a fair way to tell the room, and it also names Tactiq to everyone on the call.
Recordist never joins a call. It records your microphone and the audio arriving at your laptop, so it does not appear in the participant list. It copies a short notice for you to read out or paste into the chat and keeps a mark of when you said you gave it, but telling people stays your job. A card asks before each recording, and nothing is captured until you click Record, unless you add that app to the automatic-recording list in Settings, which is empty until you do. The recording-law guide explains where consent is required.
Captions or the call itself
Tactiq's Zoom help says it transcribes from the meeting's captions, so its transcript is as good as the captions are. On Zoom it works in a browser, and only when the host has turned on automated captions; for the Zoom desktop app, the same help points to a separate Mac app.
Recordist transcribes the call's own sound with Whisper on your laptop, so it needs no captions and no host setting, and it works the same in the Zoom and Teams apps as in a browser. Its extension's browser transcript reads the captions too, and says so; the app's transcript, from the sound, is the record.
Where the words go
Tactiq needs an account: its help has you sign in before it transcribes, and your meetings are kept in your Tactiq account. Its pricing page says the notes are written with OpenAI's enterprise API, and its store page also names models from Anthropic. Its home page says it does not record or store audio, and lists ISO 27001, SOC 2 Type II, GDPR and HIPAA.
Recordist has no account. Audio is written to a folder on your laptop, transcribed there with Whisper, and the notes are written there by default. The Privacy Ledger lists the app's network requests (a few kinds are not recorded yet; the help article lists them), and on the default setup none of them carries your meetings. If you choose your own Anthropic or OpenAI-compatible key for notes, the transcript text goes directly to that provider and the ledger records it.
Price and limits
Tactiq Free has 10 transcripts and 5 AI credits a month; one credit is one AI action, such as a summary or one question. Pro is $12 per user per month, or $8 billed yearly, with unlimited transcripts and 10 AI credits a month. Unlimited AI starts with Team, at $20 per user per month, or $16.67 billed yearly. When credits run out, transcription goes on and the AI waits for next month.
Recordist Free has no limit on recording, transcription or search, because your own laptop does the work. It includes 7 days of every Pro feature, then 3 AI notes a month. Pro is $9 a month or $90 a year for anyone who subscribes by 30 November 2026, and that price stays for as long as the subscription stays active; from 1 December 2026 new subscribers pay $15 a month or $144 a year. Pro adds unlimited notes, Ask and follow-up emails. A team of 3 to 49 people buys Pro in one checkout, with a personal key for each person; larger organisations write to hello@recordist.app.
Agent access and offline use
Tactiq lists an MCP server and a Claude connector on its Business plan, as a beta, for assistants to reach the meetings in your Tactiq account.
Recordist's MCP server and A2A agent run on your own laptop and read your local database, with no API key and no hosted service in the middle. Recording, transcription, search and local notes all work with no network connection once the models are downloaded.
When Tactiq is the better choice
If you want a transcript in your first call with nothing to download, transcripts shared with your team automatically, connections to Slack, Notion, HubSpot or Linear, or single sign-on for a company account, Tactiq covers that today and Recordist does not.
When Recordist may suit you better
If the call should stay on your laptop, if you take calls in the Zoom or Teams app as well as the browser, or if you want unlimited transcripts with no account and the audio kept beside them, Recordist is built for that.
Try Recordist free, with no bot in the call.
The Free plan gives you unlimited recording, transcription, search and Prep Briefs, with no account. On the default setup, nothing in the Privacy Ledger carries your meetings.
