How do I move Recordist to a new Mac?
Everything Recordist knows lives in one folder, so moving is a copy.
1. Copy the data folder
On the old Mac, quit Recordist, then copy:
~/Library/Application Support/app.recordist.desktop/It contains the database (transcripts, notes, action items, search index), the audio folders, your downloaded Whisper models and settings.json. Copy it to the same path on the new Mac, before you first open the app there. Migration Assistant and Time Machine both carry it across as well.
2. Install Recordist on the new Mac
Download the build for the new machine. On first launch, grant Microphone and Screen & System Audio Recording again; permissions do not transfer between Macs. While early builds are unsigned, right-click the app and choose Open the first time (why).
3. Re-enter two keys
- License key: keychain entries are not in the data folder. Paste your
RECORDIST-…key into Settings → License. If you cannot find it, use Recover key; it sends the key to the checkout email you type in. - Provider key: if you use Anthropic or an OpenAI-compatible provider for notes, paste that key again under Settings → AI notes → Provider.
4. Check the ledger
Open the Privacy Ledger. It should still read what it read on the old Mac, because the ledger is part of the database and nothing about moving sends anything anywhere.
Retiring the old Mac
Open Recordist there and use Settings → License → Deactivate so the key is not counted on a machine you no longer use, then Settings → Privacy → Delete all data if the machine is leaving your hands.
