Windows and Linux preview

Recordist has been on Windows and Linux since version 0.3.12, as a preview. Both are 64-bit x86 (x64) builds, made on GitHub Actions from the same commit as the Mac build. They download free from the download page, the same way as the Mac, with no account, no email and no invitation. They are labelled a preview until someone has recorded real calls on them.

What has been tested, and what has not

We have tested these builds on GitHub’s machines, not yet on a real call. The automatic tests cover importing a recording and, on Linux, capturing a test sound. They do not cover a real microphone, Windows system audio or PipeWire. Nobody has yet recorded a real call on Windows or Linux. Tell us what you find: Settings → General → Export diagnostics gives you a bundle with no audio and no transcript text, and you should read it before you send it to hello@recordist.app.

Until someone has, a recording could miss the other side of a call, or put the two sides slightly out of step. Record something you can afford to lose first.

The files

  • Windows: Recordist_<version>_x64-setup.exe.
  • Linux: Recordist_<version>_amd64.AppImage and Recordist_<version>_amd64.deb.

<version> is the version each button serves, which the download page shows next to it.

The download page shows the SHA-256 of each file next to its button, so you can check it before you run it.

What your computer needs

  • Windows: 64-bit Windows 10 or 11, and a processor with AVX2. Most Intel Core processors from 2013 on and AMD Ryzen have it. Some Pentium and Celeron models do not.
  • Linux: x86_64 with glibc 2.35 or newer (Ubuntu 22.04 or Debian 12 and later), PipeWire or PulseAudio, and FUSE 2 for the AppImage. See Installing Recordist on Linux.

Signing

The Windows installer is not Authenticode-signed. Edge and SmartScreen warn, Smart App Control blocks it with no override, and a PC that allows only signed software will refuse it. We never ask anyone to turn protection off. See Windows says it protected your PC.

The Mac build is signed with our Apple Developer ID (Team ID JNC57WQK69) and notarised by Apple.

Updates on Windows and Linux come through the app and are signed with Recordist’s own updater key. See How updates work.

The limits

  • Wayland. The record card cannot stay on top, global shortcuts do not work, and window titles are not read.
  • Window titles. Off until you turn on Read the meeting app’s window title under Settings → Detection, on Windows and on Linux under X11; with it on, only the windows of the program that has the microphone are read, and a browser’s only when the title is a meeting page. Never read on Wayland. Without the setting, a call in a browser stays “Browser” unless the Chrome extension is paired or a calendar feed names the meeting.
  • GNOME without the AppIndicator extension shows no tray icon.
  • Prep Briefs read your Mac calendar or a calendar feed on the Mac, and a calendar feed on Windows and Linux. Add the feed under Settings → Detection.
  • Managed settings for IT are read only from a macOS configuration profile, so they do not apply on Windows or Linux.
  • Notes engine. The first time you make notes, the app downloads the notes engine, about 1.4 GB, from GitHub. Transcription runs on the processor and is slower than on a Mac.
  • Microphone. On Windows, two switches must be on: Which permissions Recordist needs on Windows.

Not yet

The tray icon, the record prompt and detection of apps that hold the microphone all day (such as noise-removal tools) have not been checked on real machines. If one misbehaves, tell us which.

Recordist

Recordist for Mac is downloading.

Thank you for trying Recordist. Three small steps and it is ready for your next call.

  1. 1Open the download and drag Recordist to Applications, then open it from there.
  2. 2Allow what it asks for. Recordist explains each permission first.
  3. 3Join your next call. Recordist asks: Record this meeting? Nothing is recorded until you say yes.

Every install includes 7 days of Pro, so your first calls are written up in full.
